Amici's Sequel: Bigger Room, Same Dough, New Zip Code

Janowsky has never opened a second location of any restaurant. Amici South Bend, arriving in September, is the exception.

Kurt Janowsky has never duplicated one of his restaurants to open a second location.

That will change in September when Osteria Amici South Bend opens in Eddy Street Commons, south of the University of Notre Dame. “We really thought this was repeatable and scalable,” Janowsky said.

Amici opened in downtown Elkhart on May 8, 2025. Janowsky, founder of Navarre Hospitality Group, partnered with Paul Cataldo, owner of Antonio’s Italian Ristorante, to open a higher-end Italian restaurant in the River District. Janowsky was initially nervous about how busy it would be. Fourteen months later, it’s a huge success story, often requiring a reservation to snag a table. Amici has been a huge success with its broad menu of rich Italian flavors, including handmade pasta and Cataldo’s award-winning pizza.

The company announced in February that it would open a second location in the spot where Urban Outfitters had been selling hipster gear before it closed. “The new site is much larger and is meant to be a real destination,” Janowsky said. With 200 indoor seats plus a patio, Amici South Bend will be considerably larger than its Elkhart counterpart. It will also have two private dining rooms for events.
