A Small Experiment: Five Things I Loved This Week

I’m borrowing a format from writers I admire and filling it with five things I think you'll love.

On Sundays, the writer Courtney Martin sends out “Five Things” to paid subscribers via her Substack email newsletter. The Recomendo newsletter also issues six recommendations every week and I love reading it.

I’d admired doing that so this week, with a nod to them, I’m preparing my own list for you.

I don’t know if it will become a weekly practice for me, but nothing becomes a regular practice without doing it the first time.

So here are five things I recommend:

  1. “Theo of Golden” — I learned about the debut novel of Allen Levi in the New York Times and started reading it. It’s a remarkable tale about the power of generosity and kindness. On a day when I should have probably been writing, I read the last half of the book. Wow. I’m still wiping away a few tears.

  2. Ramen — The cold temperatures call for soup. I made a batch of Magic Soup the other night for the household, then went to
